Mobile app outlook bright for developers

What the numbers say...

A nationwide poll of 5,000 businesses found that 64% have equipped staff to work out of the office, compared to only 14% of businesses in 2010. That’s a massive 357% increase.

The mobile developer has climbed the ranks of IT professionals by 68 points over the last year according to the ITJobsWatch site. This sought-after professional commands an average salary of £35,000 and there are currently 312 jobs permanent jobs to choose from on the UK market.

Despite the move towards a more mobile workforce, just one in fifty businesses are offering staff remote access to files and applications via a secure virtual private network. There’s still a way to go before British workers become truly mobile - and therefore many job and contract opportunities in the pipeline.

Nine out of ten UK businesses intend to increase productivity and reduce costs by using mobile technology and devices. Most UK companies plan to use, or to consider using, mobile technology over the next two to three years, according to the survey of 320 businesses of different sizes and sectors by SAP.

A majority of businesses (80%) are planning the implementation of mobile business intelligence (BI) and mobile business analytics in the next two to three years. Another 76% will be looking at customer relationship management (CRM) and a further 64% plan an enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation.

An Appcelerator survey of 2,733 developers about six mobile OS platforms - Apple (iOS), Google (Android), Palm/HP (webOS), Microsoft (Phone 7), Nokia (Symbian/Meego) and RIM (BlackBerry) -found the following:

• Interest in tablet application development has spiked since Apple’s iPad debut last April

• When ranking platform potential, developers give the long-term edge to Google

• While iOS and Android maintained a high level of interest, second tier platforms lost ground

• Large organisations are expressing even more interest in mobile than smaller ones

• Porting applications across platforms is the number one developer pain.

• Multi-tasking tops the list of iPhone 4 features
